Thragg has pulled me out of my 7 months of drought, season 4’s animation has been consistently decreasing in quality, I hope they provide more funding in that department moving forward, but everything else carried it for me. Thragg was one of the best parts of the season.
How lacking it would have been if he was given just another deep and hoarse or raspy voice that sounds like every brute in media. Thragg is the grand regent of perhaps the most dominant but now a dying race, his characterization in the show, with the mix of pride and authority in his voice, I personally think it’s perfect. The mix of his writing and Lee Pace’s performance, his normal speaking voice providing a great contrast to when he gets emotional is like a shock to the system everytime. The scene where he stares down a bloodlusted Conquest at the end of the purge, with just a slightly stern “I will not repeat myself” The Conquest stands down, not just because of their strength difference but The grand regent deemed it so, “it is done”, this scene perfectly illustrates that he does not need to shout to impose himself, no threats, just pure aura.
